Low Dalby to Pickering

Description:

A fairly gentle section of the route which takes you to Pickering - a gateway to the North York Moors National Park. It passes through Thornton-le-Dale, one of its prettiest villages, from deep within Dalby Forest. Off-road cycling for 4.5km gently downhill from Low Dalby village.

Allow 1 to 1.5 hours

DIRECTIONS: LOW DALBY TO PICKERING

From the centre of Low Dalby take the forest track heading south down the valley with the beck on your right. Follow the lower bridleway past Low and High Paper Mill Farms and across the beck. Swing left on the tarmac road through Ellerburn, turn R at the junction and then turn L into Thornton-le-Dale.

In the village go straight over the crossroads, taking extra care crossing the road, and down Willow Garth. After 700m, turn R up Westgate (by a ford across the stream). Follow this road round until it reaches the A170 (Thornton Road) at which point turn L and continue along the main road into Pickering.

DIRECTIONS: PICKERING TO LOW DALBY

Turn L out of the car park in Pickering and onto Thornton Road (A170) to Thornton-le-Dale. After 1.5 miles turn R down Westfield Lane. Follow the road round to the left into Thornton-le-Dale. Turn L at the t-junction and into the village centre along Malton Gate. Turn right at the Green, then left onto the A170 and first right, taking extra care crossing the road, and follow signs right and left for Ellerburn. After the church follow the road right and left onto a bridleway and past Low and High Paper Mill Farms. Go on up the valley with the beck on your left, enter Dalby Forest and continue up to Low Dalby village centre.
