Cycle Route FAQs

Are there bike shops nearby in case we need to do any repairs to our bikes?
There are bike shops in Scarborough, Pickering and Whitby. The cycle hire facilities on route offer full support for hired bikes.

Are there places to eat on route?
There are various pubs and cafes on or nearby the route, as indicated on the detailed stage descriptions. However, you are advised to check the availability of refreshments carefully along your intended route and take provisions with you if necessary.

Can we get to the route by public transport?
Both Scarborough and Whitby are served by regular train services, with the railway stations as the start point in the towns. You will need to check for any restrictions on carrying cycles on these trains.

How difficult is the route?
To cycle Moor to Sea you will need basic cycling skills and reasonable fitness. The route crosses remote countryside in some places and there are a few short sections which are more difficult, where it may be appropriate to dismount. The detailed route directions clearly indicate the more tricky sections, please read these directions carefully to decide which bits of the route you wish to do before setting off.

Is the route way-marked all the way?

Yes the Moor to Sea cycle route has comprehensive route signage using cycle route signs and waymark arrows. An odd sign may be missing so please make regular map checks to save unnecessary miles. The directions on this website will enable you to follow the route, and we strongly recommend you also buy an Ordnance Survey map of the area.

What equipment will we need?
You must ensure that your bike is in good condition and that you have appropriate tools with you (e.g. spare inner tubes, pump etc). Please carry appropriate clothing including wet weather clothing. You should also take plenty of drinks and nourishing snack foods/energy bars etc.
