From The Dramatic Moorland To The Heritage Coastline...
Crossing the stunning moorlands of North Yorkshire and through beautiful forests to the dramatic heritage coastline, the Moor to Sea cycle route links the towns of Scarborough, Pickering and Whitby in a long distance cycle route. Featuring over 80 miles of forest tracks, lanes, and the former coastal railway, the route can be ridden in stages ranging from easy to more challenging and offers cycle hire on route.

An attractive pack of route guide cards covering the whole Moor to Sea Cycle route including the latest link through the Esk Valley from Great Ayton to Whitby is available to purchase at only £3.95 from the online shop or from local tourst information centres.

Comprehensive route signage has been installed, but there's always a chance that some road signs are missing, so when riding the Moor to Sea, please make regular map checks to avoid unnecessary miles. January 2009

On the Highwood Brow to Ravenscar route the loop of forest track above Surgate Brow Farm on the north-eastern side of Broxa Forest has been damaged by motor vehicles, so this is best avoided unless you want an extra off-tarmac challenge. From the car park at Reasty Bank top just turn right (south-east) on the minor road and re-join the Moor to Sea route at the Surgate Brow road junction. Also on this section, deep vehicle ruts between Moorland House and Smugglers Rock Guest House will probably make you get off and push. Worth it though as the alternative road route to the south east drops down only to climb back up again.
!
The Esk Valley from Great Ayton to Whitby now has Sustrans' National Cycle Network route '52 as well as the Moor to Sea Cycle Route, so look out for the distinctive square 52 signs on the sections from Great Ayton to Danby and from Whitby to Danby. The two routes coincide for most of the way, but the Moor to Sea route avoids Little Ayton and takes a higher, rougher road over Danby Beacon for distant views of the sea. You will also come across National Cycle Network signs on the Scarborough to Whitby railway which forms part of route No 1.
